Chotoku Kyan was born as the third son of Chofu Kyan ^{[ 2 ]} who was a steward to the Ryukyuan King before the realm's official dissolution into Japan as the Okinawan Prefecture . ^{[ 3 ]} Kyan was noted for being small in stature, suffering from asthma and frequently bed-ridden. Chotoku Kyan, nasceu em Dezembro de 1870 em Shuri – Okinawa e  morreu em 20 Setembro de 1945 em Ishikawa – Okinawa. Era o terceiro filho de Chofu Kyan  que era um mordomo do rei de Ryukyu  antes da dissolução oficial do reino do Japão. Kyan era de baixa estatura, sofria de asma  e freqüentemente estava de cama. He also had poor eyesight, which may have led to his early nickname Chan Migwa (squinty-eyed Chan). ^{[ 4 ]} Ele também tinha pouca visão, de onde pode ter se originado ao seu  apelido de Chan Migwa. . Kyan's father is noted as possibly having a background in karate and even teaching Kyan tegumi in his early years. ^{[ 3 ] [ 4 ]} When Kyan was 20 years old, he began his karate training under Kosaku Matsumora and Kokan Oyadomari .

The most long time student of Kyan was Zenryō Shimabukuro , who studied with Kyan for over 10 years ^{[ citation needed ]} . Kyan was a participant in the 1936 meeting of Okinawan masters, where the term "karate" was standardized, and other far-reaching decisions were made regarding martial arts of the island at the time. ^{[ 6 ]} Chotoku  Kyan foi um dos participantes na reunião de mestres em 1936 em Okinawa,  onde o termo "karate" foi padronizado  e outras decisões de grande alcance foram feitas a respeito de artes marciais da ilha na época.

Chotoku Kyan survived the Battle of Okinawa in 1945, but died from fatigue and malnutrition in September of that year. ^{[ 4 ]} Kyan sobreviveu à  Batalha de Okinawa em 1945, porém  morreu de fadiga e desnutrição em Setembro do mesmo ano.
