Shigeru Egami ( 江上 茂 , Egami Shigeru ? , December 7, 1912 – January 8, 1981) was a pioneering Japanese master of Shotokan karate who founded the Shōtōkai style. Shigeru Egami 茂, nasceu em 07 de dezembro de 1912  e morreu em 8 de janeiro de 1981,  foi pioneiro mestre japonês do estilo karate  Shotokan que  fundou o estilo Shotokai de karate. He was a student of Gichin Funakoshi , who is widely recognized as the founder of modern karate. Egami was born on December 7, 1912, in Ōmuta , Fukuoka Prefecture , Japan. ^{[ 1 ] [ 2 ] [ 3 ]} He was one of Gichin Funakoshi's earliest students. ^{[ 3 ]} Egami met Funakoshi when he began studying at Waseda University . ^{[ 1 ] [ 3 ]} Egami helped to establish the university's karate club. ^{[ 2 ]} Before that occasion he had already trained in judo , kendo , and aikido . ^{[ 3 ]} Shigeru Egami nasceu no dia 07 de dezembro de 1912  em Omuta , Prefeitura de Fukuoka , no Japão.  Ele foi um dos primeiros alunos de Gichin Funakoshi. CARREIRA NO KARATE

With Funakoshi, his son Gigō Funakoshi , and Takeshi Shimoda , Egami traveled around Japan staging exhibitions to promote karate as a Japanese martial art . ^{[ 3 ]} He was elected a Member of the Evaluation Committee by Gichin Funakoshi, the youngest instructor to receive that honor. ^{[ 3 ]} He taught karate at the Gakushuin, Toho and Chūō Universities. ^{[ 2 ] [ 3 ]} On May 27, 1949, he helped establish the Japan Karate Association under Funakoshi. ^{[ 4 ]} Com O MESTRE Funakoshi, seu filho Gigo Funakoshi  e Takeshi Shimoda,  SHIGERU EGAMI  viajou ao redor do Japão COM encenação E  exposições para promover o karate como uma arte marcial japonesa . After Egami turned 40, his health worsened. ^{[ 5 ]} After 1956, he underwent two operations, and at one point was in cardiac arrest for just under 10 minutes. ^{[ 5 ]} Following Funakoshi's death in 1957, Egami began trying to change karate's poor reputation as a 'deadly martial art,' something Funakoshi had tried to do all his life. ^{[ 3 ]} Egami never compromised on one essential aspect of karate: to avoid all aspects of sport-oriented combat and karate. ^{[ 3 ]} He considered that competitions modified the training and spirit of karate too much, and he emphasized that this would be perfectly clear once one had the insight that karate is much more than winning combats. ^{[ 3 ]} Após MESTRE SHIGERU Egami completAR 40 anos  sua saúde piorou, SENDO QUE  Depois de 1956, ele foi submetido a duas operações  e em pouco TEMPO estava em parada cardíaca. In 1973, Egami visited Los Angeles to teach, and in 1976 he toured Taiwan and five European countries on a similar mission. ^{[ 1 ]} Egami wrote the book The Way of Karate: Beyond technique (1976). ^{[ 6 ] [ 7 ]} Revised editions were published posthumously as The Heart of Karate-Do in 1986 and 2000. ^{[ 8 ] [ 9 ]} Em 1973 mestre shigeru  Egami viajou para Los Angeles - usa  para ensinar  e em 1976 ele visitou  Taiwan  e outros cinco países europeus  em uma missão similar.  Ele  escreveu o livro O Caminho do Karate–do em 1976.  postumamente outras edições foram publicadas com o  titulo “O Coração do Karate-Do”   em 1986 e 2000.

In his later years, Egami was troubled by many illnesses. ^{[ 3 ]} A cerebral embolia saw him go three months without eating solid food, which tested his strength, and he eventually weighed only 37 kg. ^{[ 3 ]} Egami died at 7:00 PM on January 8, 1981, in Tokyo. ^{[ 1 ] [ 3 ] [a]} Em seus últimos anos o mestre shigeru Egami foi acometido por muitas doenças.
